The British Museum, Russell Square, London
For two thousand years the myth of Babylon has haunted the European
imagination. The Tower of Babel and the Hanging Gardens, Belshazzar’s
Feast and the Fall of Babylon have inspired artists, writers, poets,
philosophers and film makers.
Over the past two hundred years, archaeologists have slowly pieced
together the ‘real’ Babylon – an imperial capital, a great centre of
science, art and commerce. Since 2003, our attention has been drawn to
new threats to the archaeology of Mesopotamia, modern day Iraq.
Drawing on the combined holdings of the British Museum London, the musée
du Louvre and the Réunion des musées nationaux, Paris, and the
Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the exhibition explores the continuing
dialogue between the Babylon of our imagination and the historic
evidence for one of the great cities of antiquity at the moment of its
climax and eclipse.
Exhibition supported by the Blavatnik Family Foundation

The National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, London
Opens 25 February 2009 until 7 June 2009.
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), arguably the most influential artist of the
20th century, pitted himself against the greatest Masters of European
painting in a life-long artistic dialogue. 'Picasso: Challenging the
Past' explores the ways he took up the artistic concerns of the painters
of the past and made audacious responses of his own.
Picasso was a passionate student of the grand tradition of European
painting. El Greco, Velázquez and Goya were of crucial importance to
him, as were Rembrandt, Delacroix, Ingres, Manet and Cézanne. All of
these artists are represented by major paintings at the National
Gallery.
Displaying some 60 works by the artist, this exhibition invites visitors
to re-explore the National Gallery's permanent collection in light of
Picasso's fascination with the Old Masters.
The exhibition is organised thematically, showing how Picasso repeatedly
returned to the great subjects of the European painting tradition,
analysing them as his personal style developed in myriad directions.
Sections include self portraits, the Spanish tradition of male
portraiture, the female nude, still life, and the seated female figure.
'Picasso: Challenging the Past' culminates in a display of the artist's
Variations where, late in life, Picasso makes direct reference to
masterpieces such as Velázquez's 'Las Meninas' and Manet's 'Déjeuner sur
l'Herbe', turning them into "something else entirely".
Superbreak is proud to offer entry tickets for the exhibition at 10.30am
packaged with overnight accommodation at a selection of London hotels.

Tate Modern
'A triumph' - The Times
Tate Modern presents an exhibition by one of the world's most famous
and best-loved artists, American abstract painter Mark Rothko.
Rothko's iconic paintings are among the most enduring and mysterious
created by an artist. In the exhibition his trademark paintings will
glow meditatively from the walls in sombre dark red, maroon, brown,
black, and grey.
Drawing from collections in Washington, Japan, and Tate's, the
exhibition will reunite for the first time the full Seagram mural
series, originally commissioned for The Four Season's restaurant in
the Seagram Building, New York.
The exhibition also focuses on late 'series' works, painted in the
final decade of his life from 1958-1970, and archival material.
Superbreak is pleased to offer morning entry tickets to the
exhibition at Tate Modern with overnight accommodation at a
selection of top London hotels.
