Northumberland is the least densely
populated County in England and has its own
National Park with wide, open landscapes. It
has more castles open to the public than any
other county. Hadrian's Wall, is the largest
world heritage site in the country and at Kielder, there is the largest man-made lake
in Western Europe set in the country's
largest man-made forest.
Northumbria's castles are often glorious and
their history is always fascinating.
Evidence of even earlier times, when
Northumbria marked the northern boundary of
the Roman Empire, still remains in the form
of Hadrian's Wall and several excavated
forts, such as Housestead's and Vindolanda.
Bamburgh Castle has a dramatic location
perched on a basalt outcrop on the edge of
the North Sea at Bamburgh in Northumberland.
The castle has some stunning views of the
Farne Islands, Holy Island and further
landward to the Cheviot Hills.
Representing the industrial age is Cragside,
a Victorian mansion set in over 900 acres of
gardens, woodland and lakes, and now in the
care of The National Trust.
The Northumberland coast with its long sandy
beaches and great scenery is popular with
visitors who can take some time to visit the
many attractive fishing villages, little
seaside resorts and castles on the coast.
The 40 mile stretch of coast from Amble to
Berwick-upon-Tweed is recognised as a
Heritage Coast and also an Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty.
