The Ribblehead Viaduct - Yorkshire (near The Peak District)

The Settle-Carlisle railway line one of the most beautiful in England features a series of spectacular viaducts - none more famous than the Ribblehead, with its twenty four arches, a hundred feet high. Steam trains still run on this line for tourists.

The Peak District forms the southern end of the Pennines and much of the area is uplands above 1,000 feet (300 m), with a high point on Kinder Scout of 2,087 feet (636 m). Despite its name, the landscape lacks sharp peaks, being characterised by rounded hills and gritstone escarpments (the "edges"). The area is surrounded by major conurbations, including Huddersfield, Manchester, Sheffield, Derby and Stoke-on-Trent.

The National Park covers 555 square miles (1,438 km²) of Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Cheshire, Greater Manchester and South and West Yorkshire, including the majority of the area commonly referred to as the Peak. The Park boundaries were drawn to exclude large built-up areas and industrial sites from the park; in particular, the town of Buxton and the adjacent quarries are located at the end of the Peak Dale corridor, surrounded on three sides by the Park. The town of Bakewell and numerous villages are, however, included within the boundaries, as is much of the (non-industrial) west of Sheffield. As of 2006, it is the fourth largest National Park in England and Wales. As always in Britain, the designation "National Park" means that there are planning restrictions to protect the area from inappropriate development, and a Park Authority to look after it - but does not imply that the land is owned by the government, or is uninhabited.

12% of the Peak District National Park is owned by the National Trust, a charity which aims to conserve historic and natural landscapes. It does not receive government funding. The three Trust estates (High Peak, South Peak and Longshaw) include the ecologically or geologically significant areas of Bleaklow, Derwent Edge, Hope Woodlands, Kinder Scout, Leek and Manifold, Mam Tor, Dovedale, Milldale and Winnats. The Peak District National Park Authority directly owns around 5%, and other major landowners include several water companies. (Wikipedia)

Enjoying spectacular countryside views, these three properties are careful restorations of a splendid 18th-century, listed farmhouse and nearby barn. Slade House itself is a former yeoman's abode dating back to the 1640s. They feature quality furnishings, and each has its own garden set in 7acres of farmland grounds; an idyllically peaceful location on the edge of the National Park. Excellent country walks can be enjoyed amid the surrounding Staffordshire countryside, with many footpaths leading straight from the door. Alternatively why not hop on your bicycle and take a leisurely ride along the leafy country lanes; an excellent way to spot the local flora and fauna and admire the breathtaking views. Cycle routes can also be explored along the Manifold, Tissington and High Peak trails, a series of waymarked footpaths which follow the course of disused railway tracks. Places of interest not to be missed when touring out and about include the great country houses of Chatsworth and Haddon, the bustling market towns of Leek, Bakewell and Matlock Bath, with its cable cars scaling the Heights of Abraham, the vast recreational lake of Carsington Water (where sailing, canoeing, fishing, and bird-watching opportunities abound), the heritage sites of Wirksworth, and the delightful spa town of Buxton with its fine opera house, which plays host to the famous Gilbert and Sullivan Festival during the summer months. For a truly peaceful day out, there is some wonderful walking to be found amid the gentle valleys of Dove Dale, while for a fun family day out, Alton Towers is within easy reach. Those seeking an altogether different outdoor experience can make their way to The Roaches, an area famed throughout the land for its excellent rock climbing. Ashbourne `Gateway to the Derbyshire Dales' offers a selection of antique shops and restaurants, a regular market day and a gingerbread shop where delicacies are made to a recipe allegedly passed on by Napoleanic prisoners of war. Many other charming country pubs and stores can be found locally, amid a scattering of classic grey-stone villages.
