East Anglia is a peninsula of eastern England
in the United Kingdom. It was named after one of the ancient
Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, the Kingdom of the East Angles, which was
in turn named after the homeland of the Angles, Angeln in
northern Germany. The kingdom consisted of Norfolk and Suffolk,
names which possibly arose during or after the Danish settling
("North folk [people]" and "South folk [people]"); the region's
boundaries, however, are vague.
It includes the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk with
Cambridgeshire. Sometimes Essex is also considered part of the
region. Much of the area is characterised by its flatness,
partly consisting of fenland and reclaimed marshland, though
much of Suffolk and Norfolk are gently rolling hills. The
flatness of the area is noted in Noel Coward's Private Lives:
"Very flat, Norfolk." The principal East Anglian cities include
Norwich (the nominal capital), Peterborough and Cambridge.
Ipswich, Colchester and Huntingdon are technically towns,
although Ely is also a city. (From Wikipedia)
The market town of Lavenham has been called
"the most complete medieval town in Britain", a tribute to its
fine collection of medieval and Tudor architecture. Mansions of
wealthy merchants mingle with simple cottages, some of which mix
crooked timber beams with sprightly pink-painted infill! Not far
away you will find Flatford in East Bergholt where John
Constable painted in his early painting days. Long Melford,
Clare and of course further North The Norfolk Broads offer
absorbing places to explore.
There are so many places to
visit in this wide open fascinating region.
